What if rest isn’t something you earn? What if it’s something you’re already owed?

Hustle culture tells us our worth is measured by our output. That busyness is a virtue. That rest must be carved out only after everything else is done. Many of us, especially those doing purpose-driven work, have internalized this so deeply we can’t remember what it feels like to just stop.

In her groundbreaking book Rest Is Resistance, chaplain, poet, and community organizer Tricia Hersey argues that rest is not laziness, but rather a form of resistance, reclamation, and justice. It’s how we push back against systems that profit from our exhaustion.

“You are not a machine. You are a human being. And your rest is sacred.”
— Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance

If these ideas feel radical, impossible, or even the littlest bit enticing, I have a new offering for you. In a four-week virtual “rest-shop” (like a workshop, but you know, for rest), we will collectively and compassionately explore Hersey’s concept of rest, our own, and connect to our capacity to create the rest we want in our lives.

WHAT IS A REST-ALONG?

Part book club. Part coaching cohort. Part exhale.

A rest-along is a community exploration of the concept and practice of what we call rest: the ceasing or slowing of activity and work in service of our wellbeing and restoration.

We’ll use Hersey’s book as our guide. Rather than just discussing ideas, we’ll practice them together. Each week, you’ll come to a live Zoom session having read a portion of Rest Is Resistance, ready to reflect, question, and be coached on how to implement these practices in your life.

I will facilitate each session with the same blend of warmth, curiosity, and emotional intelligence I bring to all my coaching work. Together we’ll create space for real conversation, honest reckoning, and meaningful change.

Let me be clear. This is not a productivity hack. It is not a wellness trend. It is a sustained, supported invitation to examine your relationship to work and rest, and to choose, perhaps for the first time, what you actually want that to look like.

WHY I’M DOING THIS

I’ve spent over two decades in purpose-driven work — government, philanthropy, health policy, advocacy. I know what it’s like to tie your identity to your output, to feel vaguely guilty any time you’re not ‘being productive,’ and to wonder if this is just… how it is.

It’s not. And Tricia Hersey’s work cracked something open for me. I want to read it with you — slowly, honestly, in community — and to offer coaching that helps you move from insight to actual lived change.

FOUR WEEKS. FOUR SHIFTS.

Week 1: The Grind Is a Lie
We examine hustle culture and grind mentality — who it serves, who it harms, and how it has shaped our sense of self and worth.

Week 2: What Rest Actually Is
We move past ‘sleep and vacation’ to explore Hersey’s expansive definition of rest — and start noticing the moments of rest we already have, and those we’ve been denying ourselves.

Week 3: Your Personal Relationship to Rest
We zoom in on the stories you hold about rest. Is there guilt, the “shoulds”, or identity tied up in being busy? We start to loosen the grip.

Week 4: Resting Forward
We close by looking ahead, not with a productivity plan, but with a rest practice. What does a life with more rest actually look like for you, in your body, your work, your community?

This workshop is for you if…

You work hard for causes you believe in — and you’re tired

You feel guilty when you’re not productive, even on weekends

You’ve been meaning to “rest more” but don’t know what that really means

You want to be challenged — gently, thoughtfully, and in good company

You want coaching that meets you where you are, not where you “should” be

Arielle is a natural coach and it was a joy to work with her! I was feeling quite stuck in my academic career. She helped me articulate my purpose, map purpose to goals, and align my energy and time to achieve those goals. It made a huge difference in my life!

I really enjoyed and benefitted from my coaching sessions with Arielle. Her innate and clearly natural ability to bring out the best in me was much needed in a time when I was going through a lot of uncertainty and confusion about how to handle the job transition. I am very grateful for her guidance and how she saw the potential in me when I was struggling to see it in myself- I felt very supported and would recommend her to anyone going through the same thing.
